Final Cut - Take Me To Church Music Video

Final Album Advertisement

Having received audience feedback about the mock up of my album advertisement and reviewed my rough edit, I have made some changes and this is now what my final album advertisement looks like. It promotes Sofia Karlberg as an artist and the new album 'Cover To Cover.'

Final Digipak Design

Above is the final version of my digipak design. This is a birds eye view of it and if I was to print it out and fold it along the lines, the photos would all face the right way and be the right size. Having received audience feedback about the mock up of it, I made quite a lot of changes which I think have been effective and successful. Overall I am pleased with how it looks and believe that it clearly presents all of the necessary information to the viewer in a visually exciting way.

This is the final version of my digipak placed onto the template that I used to size and shape the panels. This presents an idea of dimensions and also shows the basic framework that I used to help me during the process of completing this.

Storyboard - George Ezra 'Blame It On Me'

I chose to storyboard the song 'Blame It On Me' by George Ezra, as it is a song similar to 'Take Me To Church' and so fits well within my research of soul music. I have taken screenshots of 12 shots within the first minute of the video, and my storyboard comments and the shots that I have chosen to comment on can be seen below.

Key Shots

This video shows twelve key shots taken from John Legend's official music video for his song 'Ordinary People.' The types of different shots include a variety of close-ups, mid shots as well as long shots. This is a song that is part of the genre of soul music, as 'Take Me To Church' is part of the same genre. This is why I have chosen to analyse shots from this music video.

Letter Seeking Permission

Below is a screenshot of the email which I have sent to Sofia Karlberg, asking permission to use her version of the song 'Take Me To Church' for my music video. It reads:

Dear  Sofia Karlberg,

I am writing to you as an A2 Media Studies student to ask you if I may please use an MP3 version of your 'Take Me To Church - Hozier Cover'?

I really admire your work and have to make a music video to a song of my choice, in this case it is your cover.

I will not benefit in any way financially and it is purely for educational purposes.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Sophia Irvine-Fortescue

I hope to hear back from her very soon.

Things to Consider

After scrolling through the many things that I will have to consider as I plan and film and edit my music video, I have chosen to focus on dancing, lip-syncing, costume and makeup, colour vs. black and white and lighting.

Dance

Within my music video I definitely want to include some dancing. I think that I'd like to use both a soloist piece and a duet piece within my music video, edited in so that only small moments of it are presented to the viewer. I like how Maddy Ziegler does quite contemporary dancing in the music video below, but there is a certain balletic aspect to it. She is very graceful and fluid as she dancers, and this is what I will be looking for when I find two dancers who would like to be in my music video. I am passionate about dance myself, and instead of just having lip-syncing I think adding in some dance moments will breakup the song and work really nicely. I would not just have dancing though as this music video does, but think that a little bit of it will support the final narrative of my music video when I finalise my idea of what it is.

Lip-syncing

Lip-syncing is very important in my music video. If my actress is not in time with the music track, then when it comes to editing it will be very hard to accurately match up what she is mouthing and what is being sung. This means that when I film my actress I will have to possibly have to do more than one take of the same thing, to ensure that editing will work effectively and that I will come out with a music video that has accurate lip-syncing. Although I like how all of the different characters in the music video below lip-sync to the same version of the song, I strongly doubt that that I will do that. The thing that I like about the music video below is the accuracy of the lip-syncing, and how well edited one moment is into the next. It gives a sense of fluidity, so that even though you may seem surprised by who is supposedly singing, the lip-syncing is so accurate that it is easy to accept what you see and to enjoy it!

Costume and Make-up

I am an admirer of the many different narratives that Katy Perry manages to present across her many music videos. In my music video I will be thinking carefully about what I want all of the people involved in it to be wearing. The dancers will need something that is easy to move in, but that floats outwards and can possibly catch in the wind when I film outside, or when they do a turn or lift of some sort. The costumes of my actress and possibly actor will be considered later, as I am not yet sure of the look that I want to go for. I really like how Katy Perry changes her look at least four times within the music video below. Not only do the clothes that she is wearing changes, but also her hair and makeup. I love how when she is crying her mascara is running down her face and she genuinely looks distressed. I might lift this makeup idea and use it in my own video. I like how the change of her hairstyles shows her age and that her personality has also been changed by her experiences in life. She is dressed to suit her age and this is something that I think I will try and do successfully in my own music video.

Colour vs. Black and White

As the original music video of the song that I have chosen to do is filmed and edited to be black and white, I think that I may possibly give my music video a black and white filter throughout. I find that shadows are highlighted and that the contrast between black and white is really effective, especially when listening to the lyrics of this song and imagining what I want to happen in my video. I think that the flames of the fire also look really effective and powerful when filmed in black and white, something I might be able to recreate with the use of candles for my video. The cover video by Sofia Karlberg is also filmed in black and white, so I will be taking inspiration from both of these original videos and maybe making my own video black and white. I have considered the idea of using a sepia filter for moments where my actress is lip-syncing by herself, just to show a little bit of colour in the video and to also show the use of light a little better, but I shall have to experiment with this idea a little bit more before I finally decide what to do.

Lighting

Adele has a variety of different types of lighting in her music video shown below and they all work really well together. I like how the lights projected onto her from the ceiling at the beginning, although they are florescent, present a soft glow and this is what I hope to achieve in my video. I really want to use fairy lights in some way, and definitely use candle lighting, as it will create a soft glow and hopefully look really effective when filmed in a darker place. Of course I will use natural light when I can, but I also like the idea of having light behind something or someone so that a silhouette is effectively cast and the body outline of the object or person is really easy to see. Adele has someone in her video do something similar to this, except they move in front of the light and so cast shadows on the walls. I think that the use of shadows may be another effective way of using lighting, and shall consider how well this may be done, before deciding whether or not to include it in my video

Lyric Video

This is the lyric video that I made for Sofia Karlberg's cover of 'Take Me To Church.' I chose to use text that is easy to read and stuck to using basic transitions so that the words onscreen appear quickly and in time for the next verse.
